After completing the Frog, a stockier Toad followed, along with clothing from several of my favorite scenes, including a bathing suit, a jacket and pair of pants. Could short rows be used to create a chin or knee caps? What stitch might work best to mimic a webbed foot? It was an evening of smiling and experimenting and revisiting the pages of Lobel’s magic with new appreciation. Several years ago, while visiting my parents for Christmas, I found our tattered copy of Frog and Toad Are Friends on the shelf and, armed with a strong Manhattan, sat by the woodstove with a ball of green yarn and sock needles and began to experiment with how one might make a Frog. Tucked under our quilts, my parents would often read the books to my twin sister and me before bed and the sense of comfort and home they provided was immense. I’ve always loved the saying that “reading is dreaming with your eyes open,” and as a child, no book filled my dreamscape more vividly than Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad series.

I was woefully unaware of the original nonfiction title that spawned this black and white spin-off, but Wicked Plants is now definitely on my TBR list.Īs well as providing some gorgeous and detailed line drawings of the aforementioned floral evildoers for you to wile away the hours colouring in, each plant picture is accompanied by a short paragraph of text explaining the specific wickedness of said plant and providing tidbits of scientific information about it. If this time of year generally has you making a list (of people who have wronged you during the past year) and checking it twice, then you are definitely the sort of person for whom the colouring of deadly plants could be a relaxing and educational experience. I received a copy of this title from the publisher via Netgalley.Ī beautifully presented round up of killer flora for your colouring pleasure. Instead, mother after mother, with young children in tow or on their hips, came to the podium to say that their kids used to cry before going to school, but now were filled with confidence and wonder that they had found a transformative community among the school's other moms that the teachers were giving their children "the best education in the entire country." The parents who rose to speak at the monthly meeting of the Orange County Board of Education weren't shouting about mask mandates, vaccine requirements, trans kids on sports teams or books about racism. But this time they'd come out, on a mild Southern California evening, not to let the board know how angry they were, but how delighted. 2 was more love bomb than fire bomb: yet another school board meeting packed with impassioned parents. This is the first of a three-part investigation of Hillsdale College, its charter school network and its connection to the national struggle over education. 5/27/2023 0 Comments Chromosome 6 by robin cookWhile unidentified bodies routinely make their way to the medical examiner's office, what rouses Jack's curiosity is not so much that the body is missing it head, hands and feet – but also its liver.Īided by his colleague Dr Laurie Montgomery, he identifies the corpse as the missing mobster. Suspicions are fuelled when Franconi's body disappears from the city morgue before it can be autopsied – much to the embarrassment of the authorities, but to the amusement of forensic pathologist Dr Jack Stapleton.Ī few days later, the mutilated, unidentifiable body of a 'floater' arrives on the autopsy table and Jack himself becomes disturbed by the case. When notorious underworld leader Carlo Franconi is gunned down, his Mafioso competitors become prime suspects. With Robin Cook's signature cutting-edge suspense, Chromosome 6 combines the fast action of a nerve-jangling thriller with the medical possibilities of the all-too-near future. As they come to recognize and acknowledge the depth and intensity of their feelings for each other, they have to deal with the obstacles of a long distance relationship, their own somewhat reticent natures and history, and, more dramatically, the attention and nefarious intentions of Brooke and Reid, who aren't finished with them yet. This sequel to Between the Lines picks up where that one ended, the morning after Emma and Graham's chance encounter at the coffee shop. At the urging of her bff Emily, she's even dating a regular boy, albeit somewhat unenthusiastically, and trying to put the emotional uproar of the past few months behind her. So Emma Pierce, soon to be star, has been back home, trying her hardest to live that "normal" life that seems so appealing and yet elusive. School Pride has wrapped up, nothing left for the cast to do but some promotional events and interviews, and of course, the premiere. And yet, it’s about the protagonist still.Īnother significant plot point is that Ariel has dysgraphia - which is not as commonly written about as dyslexia. Much like in Claire Swinarski’s What Happens Next, the protagonist’s story is tightly woven with the missteps or choices of an older sister. The sheer pleasure of reading this was enough to take me to the end. Ariel expresses emotions in such an articulate and powerful way. The language in this book is accessible, but so beautiful to read. But by 20% in, I was mostly adjusted and immersed in Ariel’s world. So, it took me a while to adjust to the fact that the protagonist was narrating but being referred to as “you,” - and you was not really me (if that makes sense). This book is written from the second-person point of view, but told from Ariel’s perspective, which is a rare narration style. Ariel’s parents are upset, Ariel is struggling with being able to write well at school, and she can’t stop thinking about her sister and everything happening in the world. This book follows 12-year-old Ariel whose life is upturned when her big sister (the best of them all), Leah, elopes with her Indian-American boyfriend after the Loving vs. Add to it the fact that it’s written by Veera Hiranandani, author of the bestselling middle grade title, The Night Diary and I knew I had to read it. How to Find What You’re Not Looking For is such an intriguing title. Summary: How to Find What You’re Not Looking For In my experience, that meant, "Let me be openly mean." I swung around, trying to look anything but massively irritated, which was what I actually was. Coming right up," I said, and turned to go. But why would a real estate saleswoman from Clarice be.oh. Not that Clarice was far you could get there in fifteen or twenty minutes. Come to think of it, what was Selah doing here? She'd never come in without Bill. She really wanted to know all about Jason's wedding, but asking me would be like surrendering ground to the enemy. What kind of dressing did you want on that salad?" "Ranch." Selah's big dark eyes were examining me like she was thinking of etching my portrait. I was at my brother's wedding last night. "Not getting enough rest, Sookie?" she asked, her voice sharp. No matter how invisible Ex had become, she'd never be my favorite person. She'd been dating Nameless Ex-Lover for several weeks - well, months now. Ordinarily Selah irritated the hell out of me. I yawned widely as I took Selah Pumphrey's order. The game is broken down into seven different scenarios, and the scenarios are designed so that the game rules are introduced a few at a time as the scenarios progress (but can then all be played using the full set of rules). The scenarios for the game were used to recreate the battles described in the novel in a realistic way. In a 1977 review of the original (1976) Avalon Hill game, Martin Easterbrook stated that "All in all this is probably the best SF game currently on the market because it has the well worked out background of Heinlein's novel and because it is an extrapolation of current military technology, allowing Avalon Hill to use their experience in game design and gave the game an overall 9/10 rating. A third faction, the Skinnies, starts out playing on the bug side, but switches to the human side during later scenarios. The Mobile Infantry player sends in his soldiers and tries to dig them out. The player who takes the side of Arachnids has a sheet of paper with a copy of the map-board on which he plots out his bug-hive and tunnel system. The game is a hexagon-based wargame for two players. Avalon Hill redesigned and re-released a "movie" version (entitled Starship Troopers: Prepare for Battle!) in 1997 to coincide with the movie's release. It was originally released in 1976 and designed by Randall C. Starship Troopers is a board wargame by Avalon Hill based on the novel of the same name by Robert A.
