![]() ![]() On closer inspection, the book has substance, features a well-developed argument, and draws heavily on the historical record over about fifty years, starting in 1950 or so, and occasionally on earlier historical examples. At 750 pages in length, it makes for difficult reading on an airplane or on holiday at the beach, and the topic-emerging infectious disease in a world undergoing ecological upheaval-is not exactly escapist fare. Yet this is hardly your typical popular book. A quick glance at the book is enough to tell you that it is not even a standard academic work: from the sensationalist title, to the jacket design, to the lurid description and reader blurbs on the back-featuring words like “shocking,” “scary,” and “frightening”-it appears to be designed to attract attention, mostly from a general audience. 1 There is little in the way of engagement with secondary sources or deep archival research, and it does not display the kind of subtle or nuanced thinking we are accustomed to in exacting historical scholarship. ![]() Laurie Garrett’s The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World out of Balance isn’t a standard work of history. Five Little Pigs (1942/3) involved Hercule Poirot investigating a 16-year-old murder of the artist Amyas Crale for which his wife Caroline had been sentenced, dying in prison Poirot’s chief evidence oral and written is from five survivors one of whom he finds to have been the actual murderer (Robert Barnard, in his A Talent to Deceive (1980) - perhaps the best critique of Christie - thought it her best): the crucial witnesses are admirably profiled as the individual pigs of the rhyme beginning ‘This Little Pig …’. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed in battles over racial supremacy. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Yet to focus upon the Negro alone as the "inferior race" of American myth is to miss the broader dimensions of the evil. ![]() The prejudice has been nourished by the doctrine of race inferiority. It gets weird, but I'm sure I'll recover, and read it again, and again, and again. The story gets a bit side-tracked for a while but then it comes back together and it's interesting in itself for thinking about how myths change. Lavondyss - the characterisation of Tallis was very interesting, particularly in the first half. The tension and creep factor of being in the forest was well maintained even if for most of the beginning was spent working out what the earth was going on. Mythago Wood - loved it (and the ending worked far better for me), it's tragic in the sense of the reader has a much better idea of what is going on than the characters and well. I think it helps if you have a strong interest in myth-making and older styles of writing. It was written in an older style with plenty of goosebump moments. An interesting view of the idea of 'what would happen if myths/legends came to life?'. I found the exploration of myth-making, culture and history to be complete fascinating. wha? I'm going to have to re-read it when I'm feeling less all over the place about it - I was just so intensely involved in reading it that to have that ending really did my head in. Five stars! Five stars all round! Except possibly for the ending of Lavondyss, that got all kinds of weird. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments The unspoken ian k smith![]() ![]() Oz, Steve Harvey Show, The Talk, Larry King Live, Anderson Cooper 360, CNN, MSNBC and many more.
